Pulling the Plug

The Pulitzer Prize equivalent for broadcast journalism is the Alfred I. Dupont-Columbia University Awards.

PBS has 23.
NPR has 17.
CBS and ABC have 13 each.
NBC has 7.
CNN has 6.
MSNBC and Court TV have 2.

Fox News?

Zero.

Surely there's a reason for that.

Remember the "death tax repeal" Republicans rammed through in the recent $1.5 trillion-dollar-giveaway to the rich? It was trumpeted as a way to save American family farms from them greedy tax rev'noors.

Oh, how the GOP cried and wept and beat their collective breasts at the fate of the actual handful of farmers who'd be affected by the inheritance tax, knowing full well the main benefit of the monies would go to the obscenely rich.... like President Blunt Trauma and his curious family of grifters.

But now family farms are actually facing bankruptcy as a result of Herr Twittler's super-genius tariff plans. Maybe it's just me but I don't hear any hue and cry from conservatives on Capital Hill about the unfortunate fate of family farms these days. Could it be it was all a ruse?

Nahhhhhhhhhh.

Someone told me on Twitter that "Raging Pencils" is now a euphemism for our Orange Oaf of Office. I may have to call my lawyers.

I was once told that an increase in minimum wage was a back door tax increase. Makes sense. The more people make, the more tax they pay. What really needs to happen is an overhaul of the poverty level. Another system that needs overhauled is the health care system.

In the health care system, the first thing that needs to be done is to STOP all lobbying by the pharma, insurance, HMO's and the related ilk.

"Someone told me on Twitter that "Raging Pencils" is now a euphemism for our Orange Oaf of Office."

Well, that doesn't make sense. There's no way Trump's babysitters would let him anywhere near a sharp, pointy stick!

I'm pretty sure they only let him use pens when he's signing stuff and is surrounded by actual adults!

@Brandon
Which explains the obsession with Tweeting. No other outlet to vent through. No nasty memos, no rewriting the corporate vision statement, no demands for stepped up timetables for his get-rich-quicker schemes.

Well put, When.

When the GOP was Progressive

In the last few weeks I was reminded of the time when the GOP was the party of progressive politics. Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr has a quote that we as a society have forgotten in the last 40 years, "Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society." I believe the left should borrow that quote in its battle for what some call the "socialist agenda". We're told that a $15/hour minimum wage is a job killer because of the burden it puts on small businesses and low margin service businesses. The solution of course is to spread out the cost of the increase. Create a guaranteed minimum income that provides a floor, let's say $18000/year or $9/hour for a 2000 hour year. Now if you add to that $7/hour minimum wage you're up to the equivalent of $16/hour. You allow people to continue to collect the benefit on a sliding scale until they are actually making $18/hour from their employer. With two wage earners in the family you have an income of $36,000 to $72,000 per year before the plateau. But a plateau of $72K/year is a way to rebuild the middle class.

Oh and if you don't like it as a jobs package you can call it an anti-crime package, if you include a housing subsidy in there as well. (Reduced homelessness, reduced petty property crime by people trying to get money for food.)

Of course this also assumes that you pass a Medicare for all bill. (Also a jobs bill because it stabilizes the employers contribution to health care.)

In the era of Holmes and Teddy Roosevelt and Robert LaFollette it was the Republicans that worked for the little guy against the moneyed interests. It was a Republican jurist that said "I like to pay taxes. With them I buy civilization."

#45 is, indeed, a Toxic Waste.

Something tells me the whole GOP is in for a shock when President Cruel and Unusually Inhumane falls and they will fall with him and they cannot see it coming nor do they care. Repeal the tax breaks and send his party to an isolated off shore prison.

eddi

@David

Not Guantanamo! We'd be at war with Cuba for dumping our garbage in their backyard.
